There have been 13 presidents of India since the introduction of the post in 1950. The post was established when India was declared as a republic with the adoption of the Indian constitution.

1. Dr. Rajendra Prasad

3. Dr. Zakir Husain

Dr. Zakir Husain- Third President of India; Term of Office: May 13, 1967 to May 3, 1969 (2 years); Born in Hyderabad, Dr.Husain had a Doctorate in Economics. He was the first Muslim President of the country.

4. Varahagiri Venkata Giri

V.V Giri- Fourth President of India; Term of Office: May 3, 1969 to July 20, 1969 and August 24, 1969 to August 24, 1974 (5 years); Mr. Giri, a lawyer based in Chennai, was the Vice President of India under Dr. Zakir Husain's tenure. After Mr.Husain's demise in office, Mr. Giri was the Acting President of India for two months. He later elected formally.
