According to a report by The Information, Apple will not be paying OpenAI to integrate their AI chatbot, ChatGPT, into Apple devices. Instead, OpenAI anticipates that the integration will provide significant exposure through Mac devices, which will drive subscriptions to ChatGPT. The service, which costs $20 per month, is expected to benefit from the increased visibility and user engagement resulting from its presence on Apple's platform. This strategic move aims to leverage Apple's vast user base to boost OpenAI's subscription numbers without direct payment from Apple for the integration.
The report also shared that Apple plans to sign agreements with AI companies to receive a share of the revenue when these companies monetize results through chatbots on Apple's platforms. This approach contrasts with the Google-Apple deal, where Google reportedly paid Apple a substantial $15 billion in 2021 to remain the default search engine on Apple devices. OpenAI will not offer any direct monetary benefits to Apple for integrating ChatGPT. Instead, Apple aims to attract more customers by enhancing their devices with ChatGPT’s AI features. Currently, OpenAI’s ChatGPT app for iOS supports payments for ChatGPT Plus through Apple’s in-app purchase system, from which Apple earns between 15-30% on each subscription.
It was also reported yesterday that Apple is not stopping at integrating ChatGPT and is already in discussions with Google to incorporate their AI chatbot, Gemini. During a keynote discussion following WWDC, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, hinted that the company aims to provide users with multiple AI models to choose from. This strategic move has pleased investors significantly, briefly restoring Apple to its position as the most valued company, surpassing Microsoft for a few hours. The potential integration of various AI models underscores Apple's commitment to enhancing user experience and maintaining a competitive edge in the AI landscape
